Dan Ryan / Dann RYE uhn / n. / The freewheeling expressway that runs between the Loop and 95th Street, an almost entirely north-south route even though the signs call it "I-94 East" and "I-94 West." Named for the former Cook County Board president who died in 1961, a year before the expressway opened. Ryan replaced his father, also named Dan, on the county board -- a tradition that continues.
