Cameraman says Black shoved him

April 24, 2008

The imprisoned former owner of the Chicago Sun-Times is accused of shoving a TV cameraman during his corruption trial last year.

Conrad Black is the target of a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court. Gary Babbitt, who was working for WGN last summer, claims Black went out of his way to slam into him at the federal building.

The lawsuit, filed by Clifford Law Offices, seeks unspecified damages from Black, who was convicted of defrauding shareholders of their part of proper earnings.

"Mr. Black chose to injure a cameraman who was doing his job," attorney Brian Shallcross said. "It was unprovoked, not a paparazzi- type situation. Mr. Black walked in [Babbitt's] direction, clearly diverts his path and gives [Babbitt] a knock in the shoulder."

It was caught on video, Shallcross said, and left his client with a shoulder injury that kept him out of work.
