Black wants prison camp

December 18, 2007

Conrad Black would prefer to go to camp.

Federal prison camp, that is.

Attorneys for the former media magnate, sentenced last week to 6½ years in prison, filed a technical request with the judge in the case to make a recommendation that could allow that to happen.

Black, who looted millions of dollars from his media empire that once included the Sun-Times, doesn't have U.S. citizenship, so he can't qualify for a federal facility with the lowest security, a prison camp. Black doesn't qualify under the so-called public safety factor, even though his crime involved no violence. At best, Black would qualify for a minimum-security prison, which is more prison-like.

"We're asking the court to consider recommending waiving that factor," said Black's attorney, Jeff Steinback.
