Black sentencing postponded until Dec. 10

November 15, 2007
Former media tycoon Conrad Black got a brief reprieve on his fate when a federal judge on Thursday moved his sentencing date from the end of the month to Dec. 10.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy St. Eve granted the delay at the request of Black's lawyer who will handle his sentencing, Jeffrey Steinback.

Steinback, who did not represent Black at trial, is well known in the legal community for his skill in handling high-profile sentencings. Other well-known recent clients have included insurance magnate Michael Segal and crooked top Chicago cop William Hanhardt.

Steinback asked for the delay so he could have more time to prepare for the sentencing hearing.

Black faces 15 to 20 years in prison after a jury convicted him in July of fraud and obstruction of justice as part of a scheme to rip off shareholders. Black once controlled the world's third-largest media empire, which included the Chicago Sun-Times.
