She likes service, savings at low-cost dry cleaner
MAKING ENDS MEET | A look at how Chicagoans are coping in a rough economy
Commercial real estate broker Gabrielle Hanson bypasses the dry cleaner in her River North building to head to a new cleaner, DryClean Direct, a half block away.
She figures she has saved $60 to $100 a month by using the new one-price shop since it opened at 33 W. Huron last fall.
"The price was the lure. At first I was careful to take things I didn't mind getting lost or ruined," she said. "I kept on. They've been so polite and considerate."
The Huron street store is one of five Chicago locations the company opened when new owners expanded from three suburban shops.
The two-day-service stores appeal to the wallet-conscious -- charging $2.25 an item for dry cleaning and 99 cents for each laundered shirt
Other low-cost cleaners in the Chicago area include Platinum Dry Cleaners, charging $2.75 an item, and Cleaners Depot, $2.29 a piece.
