November 5, 2009

Get ready to pay more to ship certain packages through the post office next year. The U.S. Postal Service is boosting overall prices for priority mail by 3.3 percent beginning Jan. 4, the agency said Wednesday.

The price to ship a medium flat-rate priority box will rise to $10.70 from $10.35, and for a large flat-rate priority box, it will rise to $14.50 from $13.95. The price to ship a small flat-rate priority box will remain $4.95, and the price to mail a small priority flat-rate envelope will dip to $4.90 from $4.95.

Express mail average prices will rise 4.5 percent. For a flat-rate express envelope, the price will go from $17.50 to $18.30. Prices for standard mail, parcel post and first-class mail, including the 44-cent postage stamp, remain the same.
