Public library helps family cut expenses

PINCHING PENNIES | Free services, like DVD rentals, offered

May 15, 2008

Books from the best sellers' list. The latest DVD releases. Karen Paluzzi Steele is quick to put them on her card. Her library card.

She uses the free services of the Chicago Public Library system to keep costs down. The mother of two -- 4- and 2-year-old daughters -- is a regular at the Independence branch.

"Both my husband and I are avid readers. I'm more likely now to check a book out from the library rather than buying them," said Paluzzi Steele, 43. They take advantage of story time, too.

The library system's Web site (chipublib.org) launched in March makes for easy reservations of books and other items that are delivered to her branch, she said. The family checks out an average five books a week.

And a recent discovery of an expanded DVDs selection might mean more savings for the family as the Steeles consider canceling their movie service subscription.

The library system has seen a 28 percent increase in circulation in the past year, as folks realize they can pick current best sellers and video releases, Commissioner Mary A. Dempsey said. The system saw a 4.5 percent increase in the issuance of new library cards last year.

"People are economizing. This happens every time the economy gets a little shaky," she said.
