Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl has rejected a building owner’s application for a liquor license to operate a Tilted Kit Pub and Eatery in the downtown Fountain Square area, saying the establishment does not comply with community standards.
Some residents had waged a campaign against granting the license, calling the establishment a Hooters clone whose scantily clad waitresses unfavorably portrayed women and sent the wrong message.
Tisdahl said Monday she considered community opinion on both sides of the issue, including the argument that the Tilted Kilt would add to the city’s tax base. She denied building owner Ted Mavrakis’ application, she wrote in her opinion, based on “public safety concerns expressed by residents and the fact the establishment failed to comply with recognized Evanston standards.”
At the end, “I felt the community standards were paramount in consideration of this,” she said Monday. Bob Seidenberg
