Why April 18 tax deadline?
This year, taxpayers have an extra few days to file their federal income tax. You can thank Abraham Lincoln for the extra time.
The filing deadline is delayed because the District of Columbia will observe Emancipation Day on Friday, April 15. The day commemorating President Lincoln freeing slaves in the District of Columbia is April 16, but that falls on a Saturday, so the local holiday will be observed a day earlier.
Taxpayers will have until Monday, April 18, to file 2010 returns. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Oct. 17 to file.
