The number and percent of homeowners in the Chicago area who owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth fell in the third quarter. It was the third straight decline, according to a report from CoreLogic. But the decline was due to homes going into foreclosure rather than price gains.
In the third quarter, 22.3 percent of homes in the Chicago area, or 342,741, were underwater. That is down from 22.7 percent.
