O’Hare ranks last among big-city airports for on-time departures

Updated: July 15, 2013 7:58PM

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport ranks dead last among U.S. big-city airports in on-time departures, new data for the first four months of 2013 indicated Thursday.

The numbers for on-time arrivals weren’t much better. There, O’Hare came in second-to-last.

Data released by the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics for January through April of this year indicated departures at O’Hare were on time only 67.98 percent of the time, placing it 29th — last place — among big-city American airports. The rate marked quite a tumble from the same period a year earlier, when departures at O’Hare were on time 80.51 percent of the time, the federal data indicated.

Arrivals at O’Hare were on time 71.06 percent of the time through April 2013, placing it 28th among 29 big-city airports. That’s down from an 82.64 percent on-time arrival rate during a similar period in 2013.

Karen Pride, of the Chicago Department of Aviation, cautioned that snow, wind and rain “are often a factor in arrival and departure rates.’’

She said an additional O’Hare runway that will be commissioned this October as part of the airport’s Modernization Program should improve arrival and departure rates in all weather conditions.

Midway Airport’s performance in the first four months placed it somewhat higher, especially in arrivals. Midway ranked No. 13 for on-time arrivals but fell to No. 27 in on-time departures.

The top airport for arrivals was Phoenix, with a 86.41 on-time rate through April 2013. For departures, the best was Portland, Ore., with an 88.17 percent rate.
