Save those fins, sock away $780 in a year

October 30, 2009

Looking for what can be a pain-free way to save more cash? Here are money-saving tips from Self magazine:

• Set aside every $5 bill that crosses your wallet. Three fives a week translates into $780 in savings a year.

• Shop with a list. A Consumer Reports study found you spend more without one. One shopper spent $288 on 30 household items when he shopped without a list. When he used a list and hunted for coupons and store specials on the items he needed, the same items cost $166.

• Before buying, be sure you're going to benefit. Buying annual memberships to museums can be cheaper than paying for each visit, if you go often. But a $150 breadmaker that sits in your pantry after being used only twice saves you no dough.
