Crack the discount code
Get price breaks on items via keyboard, phone, legwork
If you're starting your holiday shopping early to avoid the last-minute rush or, this year, the empty shelves, you're going to want to add social networking online to your usual bargain-hunting routine.
"Many retailers are announcing deals only on Facebook or Twitter, so if you like a particular store, become a fan on its Facebook page or sign up for its Twitter feeds," said Sue Kirchner, a Palatine mom who blogs about savings and family fun activities at ChocolateCakeMoments.com and sells parent products at chocolate cakeclub.com.
Kirchner eyes coupon codes that give deeper discounts. Dozens of Web sites post the codes, including SlickDeals .net, RetailMeNot.com and FatWallet.com, and Kirchner advises shoppers to call retailers and ask for codes. "If you are interested in buying an item, e-mail the retailer, particularly a small retailer, and tell them you're interested in buying this product and that you would like a coupon code," she said.
Serena Beltz, a North Side mom who sells homemade children's clothes and accessories at ChicCraftyMom.etsy .com, keeps a constant eye on online discount company Overstock.com and Pottery Barn Kids, whose Web site offers a clearance area with children's embroidered winter hats for $5.99, and a corduroy overalls and cardigan set for $19.99, both with free shipping.
Coupon queen and blogging mom Jill Cataldo of Huntley said the best way to find deals is to start searching now and every day, because shelves will soon be filled with full-price toys and merchandise for the holidays. "Make a habit of cruising the toy aisles, particularly the clearance areas," she said.
