Groupon, the Chicago daily-deal site, is making a seemingly outlandish offer: to name your baby “Clembough” for a $1,000 fee.
Groupon CEO Andrew Mason posted the offer Sunday on Twitter. And on Monday, one person bid to take Groupon up on the offer, but the company would provide no details on who that is.
A Groupon spokesperson confirmed Monday that the deal is real — but offered no other explanation for what most readers familiar with Groupon’s quirkiness would deem a public-relations stunt centered around Father’s Day.
The deal states: “Groupon, the official World’s Foremost Authority in Baby Naming(TM), will name your child or children ‘Clembough.’ No substitutes or modifications. Spelling non-negotiable. Any attempt to name your child ‘Clembough’ independent of this exclusive Groupon will be recognized by the world as a cheap imitation.”
It continues the tongue-in-cheek seriousness, noting that “Upon your child’s birth, Groupon will relieve you of the burden of naming your baby by bestowing a specially selected, custom-first name upon your infant son or daughter.”
The “deal” offers no discount, must be used by Dec. 10 and is good only for humans, no pets. Two reviews were just as outlandish, with two people claiming their children are named Clembough.
