Motorola settles trade secrets lawsuits

Updated: March 2, 2012 8:13AM

Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility have settled a legal battle with a Schaumburg technology company over alleged stolen trade secrets.

The company, Lemko, was started by former Motorola employees.

Initially, the Motorola companies, which split off from the original Motorola Inc., filed a lawsuit four years ago against Lemko and former Motorola software engineer Hanjuan Jin. Jin is accused of downloading hundreds of documents from Motorola Inc. as she negotiated a job in China with a competing firm. Jin was about to board a one-way flight to China in 2007 when she was the subject of a random search at O’Hare Airport, one that turned up hundreds of documents from Motorola, including classified documents discussing Chinese military efforts to obtain cellular technology, according to court testimony.

Jin is on trial in federal court, where a verdict is expected next week.

Lemko had countersued Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility.

No terms of the settlement were made public.

A statement posted Tuesday on Motorola Solutions’ website says Lemko’s and Motorola’s differences have been resolved amicably. Lemko CEO Nicholas Labun said in a statement that the company “can now focus all of our energies to growing our business.”

Motorola split into two publicly traded companies a year ago. Motorola Mobility is the cell-phone and TV set-top box spinoff of Motorola Inc.

Motorola Solutions comprises the bar-code scanner, public-safety radio and radio-frequency identification reader businesses.
