The Lake County News-Sun has spent more than 100 years as the leading regional daily newspaper in Lake County, Illinois.

In addition to award-winning coverage of Illinois, national and international events, the News-Sun focuses like no other newspaper on Lake County, which is the 31st most affluent county in the United States. As of the 2000 census, Lake County was home to 644,356 people, 216,297 households and 163,953 families whose average annual income is more than $76,000.

Part of the Sun-Times Media Group, the Lake County News-Sun is sister publication of the Chicago Sun-Times, Pioneer Press newspapers, Daily Southtown and Post-Tribune and 100 other award-winning weekly and daily Chicagoland newspapers.

The paper began as the Independent (and later the Lake County Independent) based in Libertyville, Il linois in 1892. By 1921, the paper was known as the Waukegan Daily News and in 1930 it purchased the Waukegan Daily Sun (which was founded in 1897) and merged the two papers to become the Waukegan News-Sun, a name it would operate under until 1971. In 1971, "Waukegan" was dropped from the masthead. Founded by Frank H. Just in 1892, it stayed a family owned newspaper until its sale in 1983. In Dec ember of 2000, Hollinger International (now the Sun-Times Media Group) purchased the News-Sun along with daily newspapers in Joliet, Aurora , Naperville and Elgin. On July 24, 2006, the newspaper renamed itself the "Lake County News-Sun" to better identify itself with the region it serves. The paper also went to a compact-sized format with a new early-morning delivery.
