Snow Thursday, but white Christmas unlikely this year

Updated: December 22, 2011 11:57AM

The Chicago area may see some snow showers today but the forecast falls short of calling for a white Christmas.

A few tenths of an inch of slushy snow could fall this afternoon and evening, mostly along and north of Interstate 88 and the Eisenhower Expressway, according to a hazardous weather outlook on the National Weather Service website.

Some portions of southeastern Cook County and northwest Indiana could see lake-effect snow showers as well, the weather service said.

Patchy fog will linger early in the morning, then give way to highs in the upper 30s before lows dip to the mid-20s overnight, the weather service said. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

But don’t count on another batch of new-fallen snow on Christmas -- Friday and Saturday are forecast to be mostly clear and sunny before temperatures warm to the lower 40s on a mostly sunny Christmas Day, according to the weather service.
