Randall Hampton, a close friend of Bulls guard Derrick Rose, was arrested for a DUI in Los Angeles early Friday morning, and Rose was a passenger in the car, police said.
The NBA MVP was with Hampton in a black BMW when police pulled them over at 2 a.m, police confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times. Hampton was arrested after a field sobriety test, while Rose was free to go, according to TMZ, which first reported Hampton’s arrest.
A TMZ video shows a glum looking Rose standing in a police station lobby, briefly looking at his cell phone.
He then walks out of the station alone, onto a dark and otherwise empty street and ignores questions from the TMZ videographer, who asks Rose for a comment.
Hampton and Rose’s friendship goes back to childhood, when the two played basketball for Simeon. Hampton is a personal assistant for Rose.
LAPD Friday morning confirmed Hampton, 23, was arrested for a misdemeanor at 2 a.m. by the West Traffic Division officers in Hollywood.
Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Herrera said Rose was in the car and not arrested.
Hampton’s bail amount was set at $5,000, and he was released at 6:10 a.m., she said.
He was given a court date of Nov. 18 at 8:30 a.m. at Los Angeles Municipal Court, 1945 S. Hill St., Herrera said.
