Man killed, 3 hospitalized after three-car crash on Dan Ryan

Updated: October 2, 2011 7:55PM

A three-car crash on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway left a man dead and three others seriously to critically hurt Sunday morning.

The three cars collided about 9:16 a.m. in the outbound lanes just south of 89th Street, according to ISP District Chicago Trooper Jason Woo, who said one person was killed.

Reginald Fox, 45, of the 2600 block of East 76th Street in Chicago, was pronounced dead at Roseland Community Hospital at 10 a.m., according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Woo said Fox was driving a 2001 BMW X5 when he and the driver of a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix to his right both improperly tried to move into the same lane. The X5’s right side struck the left side of the Grand Prix, causing Fox to lose control of the X5 and cross all lanes of traffic to the left. The X5 was then struck by another outbound vehicle, a 2011 GMC Yukon, and both vehicles then hit the left concrete barrier. The X5 rolled, ejecting Fox, who was not wearing a seat belt, Woo said.

The other two drivers, Fox’s passenger and the passenger in the Yukon were all wearing seat belts, Woo said. He said everyone except the diver of the Grand Prix -- four people in total -- were taken to area hospitals.

Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight also said four people were taken to hospitals.

One person who was gravely injured was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to Knight. Two others who were in serious-to-critical condition were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn while a fourth, also seriously to critically hurt, was taken to Roseland Community Hospital, said Knight.

Woo said he did not know whether any citations had been issued. He said alcohol was not a factor.
