In 2005, the Field Museum opened a 186,000-square-foot Collections Resource Center below the museum¹s historic building. This state-of-the-art facility unites many diverse collections in a single place and provides space for larger anthropological and geological items.
Other collections are kept throughout the museum. The building’s third level is devoted entirely to collections’ storage, scientists’ offices and labs, and a library.
In a typical year, some 1,800 students and researchers from 30 countries visit the Field Museum’s collections, and the museum loans 37,000 specimens to institutions spanning the globe.
