Boy shot with his mother in Garfield Park drive-by declared brain dead

A 15-year-old boy who was critically injured when he and his mother were shot while walking into their West Side Garfield Park home Sunday afternoon was declared brain dead.

The boy was shot in the head and his 37-year-old mother was hit in the arm about 4 p.m. in the 700 block of North Springfield Avenue as they exited a vehicle and walked up to the front porch of their home, police said.

Someone in an older model white or cream-colored vehicle fired “numerous shots” thenat fled north on Springfield Avenue, police said.

Antonio Johnson, 15, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced brain dead at 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The boy’s mother, who was also taken to Mount Sinai, was listed in good condition, police said.

No one was in custody Monday morning and Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
