Twenty people were injured and some northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway were closed Sunday evening after a collision between a casino bus and at least one car.
None of the injuries were serious, according to firefighters on the scene.
Firefighters said one car, a Dodge sedan, was involved. State police said two vehicles and a tour bus crashed about 6 p.m. in the local lanes of the northbound Dan Ryan (I-90/94) near 47th Street.
The bus, operated by Royal Excursion out of Mishawaka, Ind., was returning to Chinatown from Gary’s Majestic Star Casino, firefighters said.
David Gillis, a passenger on the bus, said it swerved suddenly, bumping passengers around. An elderly woman who wound up on the floor was removed on a stretcher, he said.
Paramedics took 20 people to local hospitals, said Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor. Eight were in good condition and 12 were in fair condition. Another 31 people on the bus refused treatment.
Twenty or so left the scene via CTA bus, firefighters said.
The injured were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Holy Cross Hospital, St. Bernard Hospital and University of Chicago Hospitals, MacGregor said.
The local northbound lanes reopened by about 7:10 p.m.
The fire department arrived about 6:05 p.m. and initiated an EMS Plan 2 response, which brings about 20 ambulances to the scene, MacGregor said.
