It was for the chicks.

That’s the explanation a Ford Heights man had for keeping a dangerous four-foot alligator in his home, authorities said.

Dewayne Yarbrough, 43, allegedly kept the gator in a small tank and only fed it once a month — a meal of 10 live mice — to keep it svelte. “He stated that he kept the alligator as a pet because it attracted women,” the Cook County sheriff’s office said.

Yarbrough was charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of a dangerous animal.

The reptile, initially transported to the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge, will be turned over to the Chicago Herpetological Society.
