Five people — including a 10-year-old boy — were shot Tuesday night during a memorial for a murdered young male on the Southeast Side, officials said.
A suspect fired shots from a passing car at the group about 8:30 p.m. near East 79th Street and South Escanaba Avenue, police said.
A 25-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot in the head, officials said. The boy was shot in the foot. It is unclear what injuries the other victims received.
“My nerves are real bad,” said Angela Collins, 45, as she waited at South Shore Hospital for the boy, her injured grandson. “It just doesn’t make sense.”
The youngster left the hospital on crutches with family members about 11 p.m.
Collins said the memorial was for a relative who was fatally shot last year.
The group was having a barbecue when gunfire erupted.
Police are investigating the shooting.
