Mesirow Financial said Friday that it has named Richard Price its chairman and chief executive officer.
Price, 63, succeeds James Tyree, who died Wednesday at age 53 after battling stomach cancer. Price has been the company’s president and chief executive officer and joined Mesirow in 1972.
Tyree led Mesirow, a Chicago-based investment bank, since 1994. He also was chairman of Sun-Times Media LLC, which owns the Chicago Sun-Times and leading newspapers throughout the Chicago suburbs.
Price is part of an investment group Tyree formed to buy the newspapers in the fall of 2009.
Mesirow said that under Price’s leadership, the company has become one of the largest independent insurance agencies in Chicago, ranking among the top 30 in the country. Price has been a member of the firm’s board since 1987 and a vice chairman since 2001.
He has supported many civic and charitable causes, including the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the Israel Sport Center for the Disabled, the Children’s Place Association and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
