A man killed by police Saturday night after two people were found killed and a third seriously injured in Edgewater was a suspect in more than a dozen murders, as are the two men whom police arrested after they fled the scene, according to sources. The suspects shot a police officer, according to police.

The suspects work for a home-remodeling company, but police believe they also are drug dealers who rob and kill their customers. The men are suspected in at least 13 murders, a high-ranking police official said. Sources said the men are suspected in a quadruple slaying Sept. 2 in the 6100 block of South Kildare. Noel Casares, Alonso Villarreal, Roberto Rivera and Luis Santillian were found bound and shot in the head in a garage there.

The victims in Saturday’s double-murder had their throats slashed, but the suspects also have stabbed and beaten their victims to death, police said.

“These are some of the most violent guys we’ve seen,” said the police source said, adding the men are not gang members and don’t appear to work for a drug cartel.

Detectives have obtained warrants to search the homes of the suspects, police said. The two men have not been charged as of Sunday afternoon.

Authorities have still not identified two men who were found slain with their throats slit inside an apartment in a North Side apartment Saturday night.

Three men fled the scene in a pickup that rammed a Chicago Police squad car and fired a shot that injured an officer, police said.

Police shot and killed one suspect, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as Arturo Ibarra, 37,of 4521 S. Troy St.

An autopsy found Ibarra died of multiple gunshot wounds to the head, according to the office.

A law enforcement source called those involved a “very bad crew.’’

Police on surveillance about 5:30 p.m. Saturday saw men running from an apartment building in the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue, Police Supt. Jody Weis said at a Saturday night news conference.

They found three victims in an apartment -- two with their throats slit, a police source said. A third remains hospitalized at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he is expected to survive.

With police in pursuit, the suspects fled north on Broadway in a black or gray pickup truck, Weis said. They rammed a marked squad car and there were “multiple gun battles,” a source said, as the suspects fired at police from the pickup as they drove away.

A 39-year-old officer -- a 12-year veteran -- was hit in the leg and was being treated at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston.

“The officer is going to be fine,” Weis said. “It’s a stark reminder of the dangers our men and women face.”
