Where does all that trucked-away snow go?

As dump trucks slowly crisscross their way across the city, snow is slowly but surely leaving Chicago’s streets and airports. But where is it going?

Piles. Great, big piles.

Throughout the city, Streets and Sanitation trucks are turning “parking lots, parks, things like that” into giant snow dumping grounds, Mayor Daley said Thursday.

There are snow-dumping sites in every city ward. One site of a huge and growing pile is at 22nd and State, where Harold Ickes Homes once stood.

The city is using portable snow-melting machines to shrink the piles — directing the water into storm sewers. Other piles will have to wait for Mother Nature.

There’s no time to wait at O’Hare, which routinely melts plowed snow.

Melting machines at the airports have been “in full use” since Wednesday night. There are 10 at O’Hare and three at Midway, said city Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino.
