ComEd: Most customers should regain power by Thursday afternoon

Power is expected to be restored for most of the 177,000 Commonwealth Edison customers who lost power in Tuesday’s blizzard.
More than 177,000 customers lost power during Tuesday’s blizzard, but only about 12,000 remained without power at 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a ComEd statement. The majority of those still in the dark will have power restored by Thursday afternoon.
The majority of those without power are in Chicago, where 8,600 customers are still in the dark, the statement said.
ComEd crews have been working around-the-clock in deep snow and icy roads to get power restored, the statement said.
“Our crews were out in full force, working around the clock amid treacherous weather conditions,” said Anne Pramaggiore, ComEd president and chief operating officer. “We had more than 300 crews in the field most of the day, along with contractor crews from Wisconsin.”
Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas said they did not experience any outages. But gas customers should make sure vents, natural gas meters and regulators aren’t snow covered because that could cause a freeze up that disrupts the flow of gas into the home and could pose a safety hazard, said Peoples Gas spokeswoman Jennifer Borders.
Customers with new high-efficiency furnaces and water heaters that vent through the wall instead of a chimney should be on the watch for any buildup of snow or ice around the vent. A blocked vent could cause the heating system to malfunction by shutting off, or in extreme cases, lead to the accumulation of carbon monoxide in the home, Borders said.
