As the Chicago area braces for Tuesday’s blizzard, the American Red Cross is offering tips to get through the storm.
The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago recommends that residents stay inside, take precautions to keep warm, and travel as little as possible during the storm, a release from the Red Cross said.
Stock up on essentials, including a three-day supply of water, non-perishable foods, first-aid supplies, medication, pet supplies and batteries. Prepare a list of family and emergency contact numbers and make sure your cell phone is charged.
If you don’t have storm windows, insulate your home by covering windows with sheets of plastic from the inside.
Alternate heating methods, such as fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, may be cost-efficient. Use caution to guard against carbon monoxide poisoning.
Make sure pets are brought inside. Move other animals and livestock to sheltered areas and make sure their drinking water isn’t frozen.
If you do have to go outside, wear warm, loose-fitting layers. Choose mittens over gloves, wear waterproof, insulated boots, and wear hats that cover your ears.
Avoid driving whenever possible in inclement weather. Winterize vehicles and keep gas tanks filled to keep fuel lines from freezing.
Locate the nearest designated public shelter in case your home loses power or heat. Listen to weather advisories for the latest storm information.
Help neighbors who may need special assistance, such as the elderly, people with disabilities and children.
