Crushed container but no radioactive leak at O’Hare

A reported hazardous materials situation Wednesday morning at a building in the O’Hare Airport complex on the Northwest Side turned out to be a false alarm.

Crews were initially called to a cargo area near 10000 W. O’Hare about 7 a.m. for a Level II HazMat situation, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado said.

A container at that location was originally reported to be leaking something “radioactive,” fire officials said.

Investigators found a container had been crushed in the cargo area and a HazMat team determined the substance coming from it was not hazardous or dangerous, Rosado said. The material was not radioactive, he said.

The hazardous materials situation response was not in a terminal or in the airport itself, according to Rosado.

Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said no one has been injured.
