Police: Woman dies after car accident

Charges are pending for a motorist who crashed into a tree killing a woman and injuring himself and a four-year-old boy early Sunday in the Medical Village neighborhood on the Near West Side, police said.
Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said the driver, who has not been charged with anything as of 1:45 p.m., is in ‘very critical’ condition at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
Meanwhile, officers from the Major Accident Investigations Unit are still looking into the cause of the wreck but charges were pending for the driver, a Monroe District police lieutenant said earlier Sunday afternoon.
The wreck happened at 1:50 a.m. when a car struck a tree in the 1600 block of West Harrison Street, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said. The vehicle was a white car that came to rest against a Rush Hospital parking structure located on the south side of Harrison Street.
A 25-year-old woman, who was a passenger, was dead, Gaines said. The driver, a 23-year-old man, was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. A 4-year-old boy was taken in “stable” condition to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital.
The woman has been identified as Angeline De Leon, 25, of the 3000 block of South University Drive in Fargo, N.D, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
She was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 2:38 a.m.
The Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
