Man in custody after nearly 10-hour standoff

An armed man who reportedly was threatening suicide and who barricaded himself in the bathroom of an apartment in the Rogers Park neighborhood for about nine and a half hours Thursday morning, is now in police custody.

The incident began about 12:50 a.m. in the 7700 block of North Sheridan Road, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

A male armed with a gun was reportedly threatening suicide and barricaded himself inside a bathroom, according to Greer.

“He appears to be alone in the apartment,’’ Greer said early Thursday morning.

SWAT members responded to the scene and traffic was diverted from the immediate area, Greer said.As of about 4:30 a.m., no injuries had been reported.

The incident ended at approximately 11:20 a.m., when the man was placed in police custody, police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said. O’Brien had no details on the arrest and did not immediately know if anyone was injured.
