A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metra Union Pacific Northwest train Tuesday evening in Des Plaines.

The incident occurred about 5:10 at the Des Plaines Train Depot at 1501 E. Miner St., according to a Metra spokesman and police.

Witnesses said the pedestrian, a man in his 40s, stepped off the train platform in front of the moving train as it approached the station, police said.

He was found by authorities under a stopped train on track No. 1 and pronounced dead at the scene at 5:46 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

His name was not released Tuesday night pending family notification.

The case is being investigated by Des Plaines Police, Metra and the Union Pacific Railroad to ensure depot platform safety features were working properly at the time of the incident.

As of 7:44 p.m., inbound and outbound trains between Harvard and Chicago were delayed 30 to 95 minutes, according to the Metra website.
