One person was shot and killed by police Friday night in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The male -- whom the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said was between 16 and 29 years old -- was shot to death by a Chicago Police officer about 9:55 p.m. at Berenice and Cicero avenues, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:07 p.m.

Officers on patrol in that area observed a male, thought to be in his late teens, walking and “holding something under his arm, looking suspicious,” said Pat Camden, spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

When officers attempted to approach the suspect, he ran away and an officer chased him, police said.

Then, the suspect turned and pointed a large revolver at the officer, police said.

In fear for his life, the officer fired a shot, Camden said.

No officers were injured, police said.

A .44 Magnum with an 8-inch barrel was recovered at the scene, Camden said.

“That’s a huge gun,” Camden said. “Like a ‘Dirty Harry’ gun.”

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
