Chicago City Clerk’s website hacked

Updated: June 11, 2014 6:15AM

The website of the Office of the City Clerk of Chicago was hacked Friday, with users getting a colorful screen reading, “Hacked By Ayyildiz Team.”

The site, www.chicityclerk.com, also carried a message written in the Turkish language; a symbol of Islam, the star and crescent; and played Arab music.

Patrick Corcoran, a spokesman for City Clerk Susana Mendoza, said the incident occurred sometime between 5:40 pm. and 6 p.m. No sensitive consumer information was compromised, he said.

“We’re not sure what happened. We have people working on it, and we’re reaching out to the vendor, trying to determine the source of the issue,” Corcoran said.

“There was no way that anyone could have accessed any type of sensitive information. We use an outside vendor because our website is purely informational. It’s not part of the City of Chicago network,” he said. “When people make a purchase or share any type of personal information on our site, that’s all handled on a city network, which was not affected.”

The website was back up at about 6:20 p.m.
