Body pulled from Lake Michigan near Lake Forest

Updated: May 8, 2014 11:38AM

A body was recovered Thursday morning from Lake Michigan at a Lake Forest beach, police said.

Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Karl Walldorf confirmed the recovery took place about 10:55 a.m., but would not confirm whether the victim was a man or woman.

The U.S. Coast Guard and as many as 20 local fire departments responded to Forest Park beach about 8:20 a.m. after pedestrians reported seeing a swimmer in distress off the boat ramp side of the beach, south of the public beach.

At one point, a 25-foot Coast Guard response boat and at least six other dive boats were in the water about 20 yards off the boat launch.

The beach will remain closed early Thursday afternoon, police said.
