Updated: April 28, 2014 3:45PM

A firefighter was injured Monday morning battling an extra-alarm house fire in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

The two-alarm fire broke out just after 9:30 a.m. in a 1 1/2-story house in the 6600 block of South Bishop Street, according to Chicago Police and fire officials.

The blaze spread to the neighboring 1 1/2-story house and the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist an unknown number of residents with housing, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

A firefighter suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the blaze and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Langford said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known as fire officials investigate.
