17-year-old charged in fatal shooting of 14-year-old boy

A 17-year-old boy has been charged in the fatal shooting of Venzel Richardson, 14, in the Woodlawn neighborhood last February.

The 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the shooting in the 6100 block of South Vernon Avenue on Feb. 12, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

The victim was walking with several other males when a van drove past and the 17-year-old allegedly opened fire from inside the vehicle, police said.

Richardson, of the 6400 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, suffered a gunshot wound to the head, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured in the shooting, which appeared to be gang-related, police said at the time of the shooting.

The 17-year-old was scheduled to appear in bond court on Monday.
