A 78-year-old woman died Friday night in a fire at her house in the 17400 block of Oketo Avenue in Tinley Park, Fire Chief Ken Dunn said.
Firefighters responded about 8 p.m. to a 911 call from a neighbor and found the woman, who lived alone, in the living room, where the fire started, Dunn said.
He said she was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where she was pronounced dead.
Dunn said the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes but caused heavy damage to the house. The cause of the fire was under investigation Friday night, the chief said.
A neighbor who resides across the street, Paul Bennett, said his wife heard a loud beeping noise coming from the woman’s house and told him to go outside to check it out.
When he walked out, he saw smoke coming out the front of the house and called 911, he said, and as soon as he ended the call, the front bay window of the house blew out.
