A 17-year-old girl was shot to death and two other people were wounded Friday afternoon in Woodlawn.
Gakirah Barnes, of the 8000 block of South South Shore Drive, died after being shot while walking on the street around 3:30 p.m. She collapsed onto the porch of a home in the 6400 block of South Eberhart, bleeding from the neck and chest, according to people who live there.
They said she often came by to hang out and eat. The owner of the home frequently cooked dinner for people on her block. On Friday, she was cooking fried chicken when she heard the shots.
“When the bullets come, we run,” said the owner of the home, who didn’t want to be identified.
“[The girl] always had some funny joke. She never disrespected anyone,” said Timesha Writez, 20, of Bellwood, on the porch where the girl was shot.
Also hurt: a 20-year-old man who was shot in a knee and a 34-year-old man shot in a foot.
