A West Englewood man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death Saturday in South Shore of a 20-month-old boy who’d been hospitalized Thurday with severe burns.

Adonta McCoy died Saturday afternoon at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital after sufering burns and trauma to the head, face and chest in an attack around 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the 6900 block of South Cornell Avenue, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

They would not provide information Saturday about what happened or identify the little boy but said Vernon Henry, 26, of the 6600 block of South Paulina Street, was charged in connection with his death.

The state Department of Child and Family Services is investigating the boy’s mother over allegations of neglect, agency spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.
