Child welfare officials are investigating the mother of a 20-month-old boy taken to the hospital Thursday with multiple burns in the South Shore neighborhood.

The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. at East 69th Street and South Cornell Avenue, police said.

The boy suffered burns to the head, face and chest, according to a police source. He was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

It was not immediately known how the child was burned and police are questioning several people who were in the building at the time of the incident.

The state Department of Child and Family Services is investigating, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.

The agency has had no prior reports regarding the family, and there are no other children in the home, she said.
