Bulls figure to be quiet at trade deadline

Updated: February 13, 2014 12:13AM

With the NBA trade deadline a week away, Bulls vice president of basketball operations John Paxson said Wednesday that he didn’t foresee the team being active.

“You have to put yourself in the other team’s position,’’ Paxson said. “People just don’t give up great players. We obviously talk and keep our eyes and ears open. But to anticipate something is going to happen, I don’t think that’s likely, to be honest with you.’’

That means the Carmelo Anthony rumors can stop. At least until the offseason, when they could fire up again.

Paxson also discussed the possibility of signing Spanish league MVP Nikola Mirotic this summer. While that possibility had been gaining steam, Paxson cooled the talk a bit.

“Our meetings with him were great,’’ Paxson said. “Our intention, as we’ve talked about, is to try to get him sooner rather than later. But there’s still a process we have to go through. He’s just coming off the Spanish Copa del Rey, where his team won and he was the MVP. There’s a reason we went to such lengths to draft him a few years ago, and we’re hoping to get him at some point.

“It’s still too early. He has a significant buyout with Real Madrid. So there are still some things we have to do, and we can’t do it until this summer.’’

NOTE: Carlos Boozer (left calf) said he likely would play Thursday against the Nets. Coach Tom Thibodeau said he would like Boozer back in the starting lineup, even though the Bulls are 5-1 with Taj Gibson starting in Boozer’s place.
