A two-alarm basement fire cut off power to a Lake View high-rise apartment building Thursday night.

Chicago Fire Department crews responded to the fire in the 3200 block of North Lake Shore Drive shortly after 10:30 p.m., Fire Media Affairs said.

The fire started in the basement and mostly was contained there, according to a fire official at the scene. Elevators in the building were out of service, Fire Media Affairs said.

The was extinguished by 11:39 p.m., although smoke was still moving to higher floors through stairwells and elevator shafts, Fire Media Affairs said.

Only residents near the fire were evacuated, the fire official said. Two warming buses — one which appeared to hold about a dozen people — were outside the building.

The fire department advised other residents to stay inside their apartments and keep doors closed.

No injuries were reported, but crews remained at the building to check on residents, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The American Red Cross was also at the scene.

The building was being ventilated to remove smoke, Fire Media Affairs said.
