Woman leaves newborn at Northwest Side firehouse

Updated: March 8, 2014 6:40AM

A woman gave up her newborn baby Thursday night to firefighters at a Far Northwest Side firehouse.

The woman showed up at the station at Cumberland and Foster in the Oriole Park neighborhood about 5 p.m. and handed the baby over, said a police source. The mother who was under 21 years old, delivered the baby herself Thursday morning and cared for it all day before arriving distraught at the firehouse. She provided some background information and underwent a medical check before leaving. The baby was taken to a local hospital. Under the Illinois Safe Haven Law, it is legal for babies under 30 days old to be handed over to officials at hospitals, police stations and firehouses — no questions asked. The baby appeared to be healthy.
