A snowplow driver stopped a drunk driver going the wrong way in the express lanes on the Kennedy Expressway near downtown early Saturday, the Illinois State Police said.
Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, the police got several calls that a van was headed north in the express lanes north of Ohio Street, though traffic in the reversible lanes was open only to southbound traffic at the time.
An Illinois Department of Transportation snowplow driver who was plowing the express lanes was notified of the wrong-way driver, got in front of the oncoming van, slowed down and made contact with it to bring it to a stop near Fullerton Avenue, the police said.
They said the van’s driver took out six gates that were blocking entry to the express lanes. He was charged with driver under in the influence.
No one was injured, but the van was damaged.
