BERWYN — Several blocks of Cermak Road remain shut down early Thursday as crews battle a fire at a bicycle shop in west suburban Berwyn.
The blaze in the 6200 block of West Cermak Road was upgraded to a second-alarm fire about 5:15 a.m., at a 2 1/2-story apartment building over a store, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports.
The address where crews are responding is listed as a bicycle shop.
According to Berywn police, Cermak Road remained shut down to traffic in both directions between Ridgeland Avenue and 61st Avenue as of 7:30 a.m.
ComEd workers were called to the scene about 4:40 a.m. to shut off power for about 1,600 customers in the area as a safety precaution, ComEd spokeswoman Kim Johnson said.
About 900 customers were still without power as of 7:45 a.m., and crews were working with fire officials to determine when it would be safe to restore electricity, Johnson said.
Riverside, Oak Park and Stickney Township firefighters were called in to assist with the fire.
Berwyn fire officials could not be reached for comment Thursday morning.
