One man is dead, a woman is missing and another man remains hospitalized after the three fell into the Chicago River in the Streeterville neighborhood while trying to retrieve a cell phone from the water.

Ken Hoang, 26, climbed over a fence in the 400 block of East Water to reach for his phone after he dropped it into the river, authorities said. Hoang’s two friends, a man and woman, tried to help him, but also fell into the water.

The two men were pulled from the river a few minutes after midnight, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Hoang, of St. Paul, Minn., was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 3:14 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The other man, 23, remains in fair condition at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital early Monday.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit suspended a three-hour search for the 21-year-old woman early Monday, police said. A police official at the scene said there was zero visibility in the water during the search effort.

The search will resume later Tuesday morning, police said.
