Man shot by police in year’s first reported shooting

Updated: January 1, 2014 4:04AM

A police officer shot a man who allegedly raised a gun toward officers moments after midnight Wednesday in the first reported shooting of the new year, police said.

Area Central Operation Impact officers were driving on patrol in the 500 block of East 67th Street when they heard shots fired, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the man was celebrating New Year’s Eve by firing a gun.

The officers left their vehicle and walked into an alley to investigate, where they were confronted by the armed man, police said.

When police announced themselves, he pointed a weapon at them, and one of the officers shot him in the leg, Camden said.

The man, whose age was not immediately known, was taken to Stroger Hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound, Camden said. Neither Camden nor the statement provided details on the man’s condition.

Camden said the man had been free on home monitoring for a previous conviction for unlawful use of a weapon.

Area Central detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority--which investigates all police-involved shootings--are investigating.
