A gunman who allegedly shot an Arlington Heights police officer was shot and killed by police after he barricaded himself in a home and held a woman hostage in northwest suburban Arlington Heights Thursday night.

The injured officer, a 20-year veteran, was shot in the “facial” area while responding to a domestic incident in the 1900 block of Windham Court, Arlington Heights Police Cmdr. Andrew Whowell said.

The alleged gunman, identified as 41-year-old Eric M. Anderson of Niles, was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights at 11:02 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

“I would surmise it was a domestic incident. I don’t know the specifics,” Whowell said.

Other police officers were able to pull the injured officer out of the home, and he was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The officer was in critical condition, Whowell said.

Whowell said the gunman is someone known to the police department.

Officers shot the man after they forced their way into the home, the commander said. Reporters at the scene heard what sounded like three gunshots before 11 p.m. as the hostage standoff came to a close.
